Slight tonnage decline in January at Heathrow Airport

Heathrow Airport’s tonnage figure dipped slightly by 1.8 per cent in January to 130,692 tonnes.

In the last 12 months, the London hub has seen 1,682,799 tonnes pass through, a fall of 1.4 per cent on the previous 12 months.

The airport said the best performing markets for cargo were Africa, with growth of 8.9 per cent, and Latin America which saw an increase of 8.8 per cent largely driven by an increase in movements to Brazil.

Heathrow was not the only airport in the UK to see a fall as MAG Airports also reported a 1.6 per cent fall to 8,100 tonnes at Manchester Airport in January over the same month in 2018, while London Stansted Airport volumes fell 6.6 per cent to 19,600 tonnes.

One positive piece of news on the cargo front in January for MAG was that East Midlands Airport saw tonnage rise 2.1 per cent to 30,100 tonnes.
