Resuming Airline Operations & Seeking Opportunities in Post-COVID-19 Era!

EVA International Editorial Team

COVID-19 has posed a continuous threat to the global economy and public health. One of the hardest-hit businesses in the world is the aviation industry which contributes to 3.6 percent of the world’s GDP by creating a total of 65.6 million jobs globally in aviation-related industries.

The devastating impact of COVID-19 on the airline industry was researched by Dr. Rajee Olaganathan, faculty at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University – Worldwide, USA, and a Fellow Member of the Royal Aeronautical Society, U.K. She said, “The value of the airline industry decreased to an unexpected level of USD 371 billion loss of gross passenger operating revenues. In terms of revenue by regions, the Asia-Pacific region was most affected with 120 billion USD loss while European region lost 100 billion USD loss.”

Using Data Analytics to Determine Demand

The researcher recommends “to utilize data analysis to identify the opportunities by tracking the COVID-19 progress and recovery at a global and regional scale analysis, flight demand analysis by identifying the air route for reactivation, tracking the demand for global air travel, and customer-specific air travel demand tracking through e-commerce.” The researcher also recommended other proactive technology and strategic plans to address COVID-19 issues.

Holistic Approach for Restarting & Reacquiring

Dr. Olaganathan highlighted that, “the industry needs to adopt a holistic approach by incorporating business, management, and big data analytics technology for the airline recovery and its preparedness for the post-COVID-19 era. This needs strong coordination, cooperation, and effective communication between different stakeholders of the aviation industry as it has a realistic application.”

Re-opening Skies

At present, the use of data analytics in airline recovery is being tested in real-time in Vietnam, and the Dubai International Airport is tracking COVID-19 market recovery to decide on how to reopen the facility. Dr. Olaganathan said that “Every airline and airport can benefit by embracing this holistic approach.” She also mentioned, “As the pandemic is still ongoing and new variants like B-117, B-1351, P-1, and Delta variants are emerging, the industry needs long-term business support for organizational success.”
