COOL CHAIN ASSOCIATION 7th PHARMA & BIOSCIENCES

Overview

The Cool Chain Association (CCA) is a not-for-profit organisation and aims to work closely with the supply chain to enhance the quality, efficiency, and value of temperature-sensitive products and make a tangible difference in the cool chain sector.

A community for cool chain professionals, the association provides thought leadership, networking, results and looks to develop innovative solutions to challenges faced in the sector.

The 7th Airfreight Pharma Conference takes place in Paris, one of the centre points in the air pharma community and is an opportunity for the supply chain to enhance their understanding and knowledge of the handling of pharma products.

CCA events are designed to bring the industry together to share best practice and innovate to create a seamless chain for the handling of pharma products.

At the conference, delegates can enjoy lively, open and honest debates on challenges faced within the pharma sector with a focus on fostering even greater collaboration, cooperation and communication between CCA members and stakeholders of the industry.

Final mile innovation

Arguably the most pressing concern in the air pharma supply chain is the final mile of delivery of freight, as all too often shipments are compromised during this stage. There is a clear need for all stakeholders to investigate ways to collaborate and find solutions to make sure there is a successful end-to-end chain. Embracing new innovations and technology is at the forefront of the debate to help fix the problem.
What impact is the poor last mile performance having on the air pharma chain? What can be done to improve the final mile of the supply chain? How can stakeholders work together to fix the final mile? How can innovation and technology help? What innovations have been developed to date? Is there a need to work more with Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs)?

Drones: What are they bringing to the pharmaceutical supply chain?

The use of drones to deliver pharmaceuticals in remote regions is on the rise, especially on the African continent and they are now being utilised to move medical shipments in the final mile of delivery. The likes of Astral Aviation have been using drones in Africa while express freight operators UPS and DHL have also been utilising unmanned aircraft to deliver medical supplies.
What are the benefits of using drones for pharmaceutical companies? How do drones benefit the final mile of delivery? What are the operational challenges? Will the use of drones to deliver pharmaceuticals become even more widespread in the future? What investment is needed?

Collaboration and transparency in the air pharma supply chain is on the rise with the growth of organizations likes Pharma.aero, the introduction of pharma trade lanes and air cargo communities across the globe but there is still a clear need for more.
What further collaboration and transparency can take place? Is there resistance from some parts of the chain to collaborate and be transparent? What barriers are there? What collaborative initiatives have been a success? What lessons can be learnt for the future?

Data Sharing – How can the air pharma supply chain benefit?

The air pharma supply chain is complex but if all stakeholders share data in the movement of shipments it can help reduce costs, improve efficiency and ensure temperature excursions are kept to a minimum.
How can every part of the supply chain benefit from the sharing of data? Is every stakeholder on board with sharing data? Why has it been so slow to take-off in the air pharma chain?

Edwin Kalischnig, CEO, Xtreme Technologies
