Heathrow Airport’s tonnage falls 9.9% in August

Heathrow Airport’s air cargo tonnage fell 9.9 per cent to 126,864 tonnes in August with the North American and Asia Pacific markets seeing the biggest regional falls.

The only regions that grew freight traffic positively in the month at the UK hub were Africa which saw a 4.2 per cent uplift to 7,047 tonnes and the Middle East with a 1.8 per cent increase to 21,451 tonnes. Non-EU Europe traffic was also up 1.9 per cent to 4,896 tonnes.

EU tonnage was down 8.3 per cent to 7,555 tonnes, North American traffic fell 12 per cent to 44,580 tonnes, Latin American tonnage fell 6.1 per cent to 4,431 tonnes, while Asia Pacific tonnage was down a significant 17 per cent to 36,855 tonnes.

In the first eight months of the year, tonnage at Heathrow Airport is down 5.3 per cent to 1.063 million tonnes. In the last 12 months, the hub has seen a 4.3 per cent decline in cargo.
