Cargolux celebrates 50th anniversary with record results

The record result came despite the considerable problems caused by the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 that heavily impacted air cargo as well as all commercial aviation.

In its financial statement, Cargolux said the initial outlook for the year was bleak after production was halted in China when Covid-19 first appeared there and led to a shortfall in available air freight capacity, particularly in the long haul sector.

However, air cargo also benefited from the unprecedented global demand for personal protective equipment (PPE) and other products.

This allowed Cargolux to play a key role in delivering essential supplies throughout the crisis, so alleviating the void left by grounded passenger aircraft and keeping supply chains moving.

The statement also added that the company had to adapt its network to optimise services while its fleet of 30 Boeing 747 aircraft, comprising of 16 Boeing 747-400 freighters (10 B747-400Fs and 6 B747-400ERFs) and 14 Boeing 747-8 freighters, proved to be particularly useful.

Looking ahead, Cargolux added with Covid-19 still prevalent across the globe, a degree of uncertainty remains as to how 2021 will develop, although it seems likely that air cargo will continue to have a significant role to play in the global economy.
