Brussels Airport’s tonnage falls 8.7% in August, freighter traffic down 17.1%

Cargo tonnage at Brussels Airport fell by 8.7 per cent in August with the 17.1 per cent freighter traffic downturn the chief reason for the decline.

The Belgian gateway processed 52,269 tonnes in the month, as the reduction in the number of freighter flights compared to last year hit figures.

The only segment showing growth in August was belly cargo which increased by 2.7 per cent to 13,646 tonnes, driven by the arrival of larger aircraft from Finnair and the recovery of the freight loading business at Brussels Airlines compared to last year.

Freighter traffic fell to 9,962 tonnes in August while integrator flow was down 5.7 per cent to 16,519 tonnes and trucked cargo declined 15.8 per cent to 12,143 tonnes.

In the first eight months of 2019, Brussels Airport’s freight was down 9.4 per cent to 441,742 tonnes, compared to the same period in 2018.
