Amazon to hire 100,000 workers as online orders surge

Amazon.com Inc has announced it will be hiring 100,000 warehouse and delivery workers in the US to deal with the dramatic increase in online orders, as many consumers are turning to the web to meet their needs during the coronavirus outbreak.

With retailers struggling keep food and hygienic products on their store shelves due to panic buying, many customers are turning to online stores.

We want those people to know we welcome them on our teams until things return to normal and their past employer is able to bring them back,” Amazon said.

The supply chain for online shopping has remained largely unaffected despite growing government restrictions on commercial activities.

Amazon said it would add $2 to its minimum $15 per hour to U.S. workers’ wages through April. The extra pay for hourly employees in North America and Europe is expected to cost more than $350 million.
