ACI Europe reports freight traffic declines 3.5% in first half of 2019

European airport trade body ACI Europe said that in the first six months of 2019, freight traffic fell by 3.5 per cent compared to the same period in 2018.

Both the European Union (EU) and Non-EU markets saw a decline in freight traffic during the six months with the EU market declining 3.7 per cent, bearing the brunt, although non-EU airports also saw a fall of 1.9 per cent.

ACI Europe director general, Olivier Jankovec (pictured above) said: “The slump in freight traffic is where it really bites at the moment. And it is not getting any better, with June registering a drop of -7.1% – the worst monthly performance in more than 7 years.

“This does not bode well for the months ahead, especially as passenger traffic usually does not remain totally isolated from trends in freight traffic.”
