London Stansted Airport and East Midlands Airport (pictured above) both recorded strong tonnage gains in July but Manchester Airport saw a double-digit fall.
Operator MAG Airport said Stansted handled 22,141 tonnes in the month, a year-on-year (YOY) rise of 4.5 per cent, East Midlands 29,711 tonnes, a YOY increase of 4.2 per cent but Manchester’s tonnage declined YOY by 10.8 per cent to 10,754 tonnes.
The UK’s busiest airport for freighters East Midlands hit a new milestone in July handling over 1,000 tonnes a day, which MAG said can be attributed, in part, for increasing appetite for online shopping and e-commerce.
The airport operator said goods such as clothes, mobile phones, footwear, beauty products, fashion accessories, toys and video games come through the airport, in addition to higher value heavier cargo.
