Tonnage at Californian gateway ONT continues to grow strongly

Southern Californian gateway Ontario International Airport (ONT) which is a growth base for express freight carrier FedEx Express has seen a strong surge in cargo tonnage this year.

The airport has reported shipments of commercial freight and mail grew at a robust rate from January through June, increasing 17.5 per cent to more than 351,000 tonnes from 300,500 tonnes during the same period a year ago.

In June, ONT handled more than 62,500 tonnes of cargo, a boost of nearly 17 per cent over June last year.

Ontario International Airport Authority president, Alan Wapner expressed optimism the strong results of the first half of the year and previous announcements of new commercial air service beginning later this summer bode well for ONT in the second half of 2018.

Last month, ONT approved a lease agreement with FedEx Express to solidify the company’s presence and continue operations at  for at least three more decades and the integrator will relocate its operations to a 51.1-acre site in late 2020 as part of a $100 million investment.
