FedEx abandons US-Cuba freighter services plan

Memphis-based integrator FedEx has abandoned plans to start a Cuba freighter service from the US, according to a report on Bloomberg.

The express freight company told the publisher that it will not be filing for an extension of the start-up date for the freighter connection.

FedEx had previously outlined plans to fly five times a week to Cuba after winning approval in 2016 but is now said to be looking into alternative cargo-only options. In 2017 it also said there was issues starting the service, such as gaining airport ground services.

US-Cuba relations have thawed since President Donald Trump took office, and his administration has brought in new restrictions in 2017 on US citizens travelling to Cuba and doing business with a list of government-controlled businesses.
