Freight surges in August at Hong Kong International Airport

Freight volumes at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) reached new monthly highs in August as cargo and airmail throughput reached 431,000 tonnes – increasing 2.4 per cent compared to the same month last year.

The airport saw strong nine per cent year-on-year (YOY) growth in transshipments, which contributed the most to the increase in cargo throughput.

Amongst key trading regions, traffic to and from North America and Southeast Asia posted the most significant growth.

Over the first eight months of 2018, HKIA handled 3.3 million tonnes of cargo and airmail, representing a YOY increase of 3.1 per cent.

On a 12-month rolling basis, cargo and airmail throughput recorded 5.1 million tonnes, surging 4.2 per cent YOY.
