Vienna Airport’s tonnage on the rise

Vienna Airport’s tonnage increased year-on-year (YOY) by four per cent in July to 25,493 tonnes as new belly routes helped the airport grow cargo.

Airport operator Flughafen Wien Group also said in the first seven months of the year, freight is up YOY by 3.6 per cent to 168,098 tonnes. Cargo volume increased by 3.5 per cent in the first half of the year to 142,605 tonnes.

The Group’s other interest also saw better results with Malta Airport, which is a fully consolidated airport, saw tonnage increase 17.1 per cent in July to 1,360 tonnes and 10.3 per cent in the first seven months of the year to 9,258 tonnes.

The Flughafen Wien Group also reported that net profit for the first half of the year increased substantially to €72.4 million a YOY increase of 20.4 per cent on the same period last year.

The operator said the Airport City is steadily expanding and a new health centre at the airport will open at the beginning of October. DHL is setting up a logistics campus, and about 2,500 new jobs will be created in 2018 at the Airport City and the Airport Region thanks to new airline bases and business location projects.

Tonnage is set for a further boost in the second half of 2018 as a new long-haul flight connection to Shenzhen in China will start along with new destinations in Europe and several frequency increases.
